Meet Mandy in New York
"My experience abroad has been incredibly transformative on a personal level". Read Mandy's full experience here.
Why did you choose to go abroad?
Since I was about five years old, going to the United States, and particularly New York City, has been my dream. In 2022, I had the incredible opportunity to pursue my minor in Albany, NY, which allowed me to spend time in the U.S. and take several trips to NYC. Those experiences only confirmed my passion and love for this city and country even more, and when I completed my studies, I saw it as the perfect opportunity to go back and gain work experience in marketing. Being here now feels like the fulfillment of a long-held dream, and I am incredibly grateful to Stage-Global for their immense support in making this a reality.
How does the US culture differ from your culture and what has impressed you most so far?
One of the key differences I've noticed between Dutch and American culture is the level of enthusiasm and optimism that is often expressed here. In the U.S., people tend to be very positive, open, and enthusiastic, which can be very energizing. I've also been impressed by the strong sense of community and willingness to help one another, whether it's in a professional setting or just in day-to-day interactions. This welcoming atmosphere has made my experience here incredibly enriching.
Could you take us for a day? What are your routines?
My day starts with a subway commute over the Williamsburg Bridge, and truly, those views never disappoint! Before heading into the office at 9 am, I grab a coffee and begin by checking my emails, reviewing the marketing calendar, and planning out my tasks for the day. One of the things I love most about my role is the variety—it keeps every day fresh and exciting. My responsibilities range from attending meetings and influencer outreach to creating and distributing marketing materials, managing social media, and interacting with customers, partners, and other outreach activities. After wrapping up work at 5 pm, I either unwind with some personal time or catch up with friends.
How has this experience abroad helped you to grow personally?
My experience abroad has been incredibly transformative on a personal level. Being in a different country has pushed me out of my comfort zone, helping me become more adaptable and resilient. Navigating a culture that is both diverse and fast-paced, like the U.S., has sharpened my problem-solving skills and broadened my perspective. I've learned to be more independent, take initiative, and communicate effectively in a multicultural environment. This experience has not only enhanced my professional skills but also helped me grow into a more confident and self-assured individual.
Why would you recommend others to do a program abroad?
I would highly recommend doing a program abroad because it offers a unique opportunity for personal and professional growth that you can't get from staying within your comfort zone. It's a chance to challenge yourself, grow in ways you never imagined, and create memories that will last a lifetime. There's something incredibly empowering about pursuing your passions in a new environment and seeing how far your ambitions can take you:)
If you could express your experience in three words, what would these be?
Fulfilling, Memorable & Grateful
