Meet Lisa in Mauritius

Meet Lisa in Mauritius

"I believe everyone should experience going abroad alone at least once in their life." Read the full interview here.

Why did you choose to go abroad?
I’m in my third year of International Business, and as part of my studies, I am required to study and work abroad for six months.

How does the culture in Mauritius differ from your own, and what has impressed you the most so far?

The people here are incredibly friendly and helpful. They have a more relaxed approach to life and focus on taking things one step at a time, unlike the fast-paced, stressful rush in the Netherlands. They communicate less directly and always strive to remain polite and kind.

Could you take us through a d
ay? What are your routines?
On weekdays, I leave the house at 8:15 to start work at 8:30. During lunch breaks, we all sit together outside to eat. After work at 5, I usually go to Muay Thai/kickboxing classes or go to the gym. In the evenings, I eat with friends or we head to the beach for sunset. On weekends, we do hikes, explore beautiful beaches, or hop on a boat!

How has this experience abroad helped you grow personally?

Absolutely! Being away from your usual routine, friends, and family gives you a fresh perspective on life. You become more grateful and gain many new insights.

Why would you recommend others to do a program abroad?

It broadens your perspective of the world, pushes you out of your comfort zone, and teaches you so much. I believe everyone should experience going abroad alone at least once in their life. I think it’s a fantastic way to step out of your routine and grow.

If you could express your experience in three words, what would they be?

Amazing, adventurous, fun.
