Meet Babette in New York
"I chose to move abroad to challenge myself in a new environment and gain professional experience". Read the full interview here.
Why did you choose to go abroad?
I chose to move abroad to challenge myself in a new environment and gain professional experience. After visiting New York a few times and falling in love with the city, the decision was easy. I wanted to be there for a little longer than a week. The city gives me a lot of energy. There's always something to do, to see, and something new to try out.
How does the US culture differ from your culture and what has impressed you most so far?I like the mindset of the New Yorkers. They are very friendly and welcoming. It may take a little bit of time to really get to know them, once you do, they’re always up for something fun. I embraced it by saying yes to everything.
Could you take us for a day? What are your routines?
A typical weekday begins with a 30-minute bike ride from Midtown to our office in Dumbo, Brooklyn. I work in the office five days a week, and each day brings something new, which keeps things exciting. During my break, I often head down to the waterfront, the view never gets old. After work, I either relax at home or meet up with friends. I love the weekends here; there's so much to do that it feels like a mini-city trip every time. I enjoy exploring new coffee and brunch spots and strolling through my favorite neighborhoods, SoHo and the West Village.
How has this experience abroad helped you to grow personally?
I prepared myself for a tough first few weeks. But I very quickly realized that I made the right decision. Moving abroad really pushed me out of my comfort zone. This journey has also encouraged me to embrace new experiences and challenges, it helped me with my confidence in both my personal and work life.
Why would you recommend others to do a program abroad?
I recommend a program abroad because it’s a great chance for you to grow as a person. Living in a different country pushes you out of your comfort zone.
If you could express your experience in three words, what would these be?
Best decision ever.
